Conference for Privacy Professionals to put heads in the cloud - 30th November 2010

Sydney

Privacy and IT professionals will have their heads in the cloud in November when they gather – in person – to discuss privacy and cloud computing at the third annual conference of the International Association of Privacy Professionals Australia and New Zealand (iappANZ).

iappANZ’s one-day conference, "Silver Lining: The Privacy Umbrella of Cloud Computing" will be held in Sydney with debate, information sharing and discussion among professionals dealing with or exploring the ubiquitous ‘cloud’.

According to iappANZ’s President, Kevin Shaw, privacy professionals from small, medium and large-sized organisations are coming face-to-face with the privacy challenges of operating in the cloud.

"Cloud computing is something every privacy professional in Australia and New Zealand is dealing with either directly or indirectly, which is why it’s critical that we gather together and share our experiences," Mr Shaw said.

"The cloud is being used to store everything from school reports and health records to employee details and customer service transactions, and as the data in the cloud grows so does the role of the privacy professional."

The conference is the only dedicated privacy and cloud-computing event in the ASEAN region – bringing together privacy professionals from across government, private, education and healthcare sectors, along with leading IT experts.

A stimulating mix of international keynote speakers including Dr. Larry Ponemon, expert-led forums and exhibitions will provide attendees with an insight into the wide-ranging approaches being taken by government, advocacy groups, business and professional practitioners.

It’s also a perfect opportunity to network, share ideas and learn from other privacy professionals including leaders in cloud computing. Topics up for discussion will include:

  • framing and analysing the issues of privacy and confidentiality in the cloud in the Asia-Pacific region

  • providing practical tips and insight on how to identify and assess the privacy risks of a cloud computing proposal

  • providing advice on when and how an organisation can share personal information with a cloud service provider

  • highlighting what the cloud may mean for an organisation’s privacy statements and privacy policies

  • explaining some of the consequences related to the security of personal information when stored in the cloud.

Knowledge Sharing and Networking Meetings

The iappANZ holds quarterly meetings to provide a forum for members to meet regularly to share information and network with each other. The meetings are based around a presentation from a prominent speaker from government, a regulator, or a technology, academic or legal expert. The objective of the presentations is to help members keep up to date with the rapidly changing environment that Privacy Professionals work in. The presentations are followed by refreshments courtesy of the host and an opportunity to network with other members.

Members of iappANZ are welcome to bring interested guests to attend these meetings.

Privacy After Hours

What is Privacy After Hours?
Privacy After Hours (PAH) was created by the IAPP to help privacy professionals get to know other local privacy pros. It's a chance to network and socialize in a casual setting at an event organized by a volunteer host in your community.

Who should attend?
Privacy professionals and anyone out there who works in or is interested in privacy! The majority of PAH attendees are professionals involved with the use and protection of personal information, including IT, legal, information security, compliance, marketing (customer information) and human resources (employee information). IAPP membership is not required.

What should we discuss at PAH events?
Whatever you want! This is your opportunity to get to know other privacy professionals in your area and learn about their jobs and other interests.

Who pays for PAH events?
Individuals are responsible for their own expenses. These events are not sponsored or financially supported in any way by the IAPP.
